Roses and Peonies - Manet, Monet, Renoir, and Van gogh

I finally hung up my Nana's nostalgic flower prints in my new office. They are antique chromolithographs by Paul de Longpre, created in the early 1900s at Gray Lith Co. of New York. One is a pair of pink and red geraniums, entitled Home Sweet Home. The red roses print, Half Yard Long, is from 1900. Bride Pink Cabbage Roses and another with pink and gold roses are from around 1907. The artist only lived in NY from 1890-99, then moved to Hollywood, CA.





My maternal grandfather, Walter Jenkins, was a florist who had a shop in New York City. I believe it may have been located around W. 34th or W. 37th street. He died when my Mom was about 28 years old. Since my Mom passed in 2011, that information is forever lost.





All I have is this cherished black-and-white photo of him standing outside his shop.

These prints inspired me to write a post about roses and peonies by other famous artists, including Manet, whom I teach about along with a lesson on positive-negative space. Here, I will compare and contrast paintings by Realists, Édouard Manet and Henri Fantin-Latour and Impressionists, Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and Vincent Van Gogh.





Manet's Peonies is a fine example of positive-negative space. Of course, I also show lots of fun optical illusions such as the vase with interesting profiles (See my Visual Observation and Illusion post from June 2019). The pair of paintings make for a lively discussion of the differences between them. Students must also find similarities. I go around the room asking students where their eyes go first. In the end, I do a show of hands to find out which of the two paintings they prefer.


Next, we study another Manet version of peonies alongside that of his colleague, Claude Monet. This pair is always more exciting to talk about because of the colors and the difference in the projected mood. I've also lucked out when there are peonies in the classroom that were gifted to my teacher. They definitely appreciate how delicate these flowers are!

Many artists painted peonies, and here are two painted by Renoir.





While my art lessons have been primarily focused on the peonies painted by Manet and Monet, I have to say that I prefer the Renoir and Van Gogh versions with the warm brown backgrounds. A close second would be the brighter, happier red peonies of both Renoir and Monet.

Finally, I want to highlight the peonies painted by Vincent
Van Gogh.








Vincent's peonies are drooping downward toward the reddish-orange tabletop, but the addition of the blue blooms brings your eye back upward. Since Van Gogh is most famous for flowers other than peonies, here are two more you may know.

One of my all-time favorites is Van Gogh's Irises painted in 1889. I was lucky enough to see Sunflowers on a trip to London in 2017. I never bothered to count its blooms.

Op & Pop Artists - From Allegorical Renaissance to Modern Day Optical and Kinetic Art

In this post, I will highlight artists who in the 1960s and 1970s engaged in optical ('Op') and popular ('Pop') art in a time of experimentation and more abstract forms of expression. Four hundred years earlier, Italian artist, Giuseppe Arcimboldo created self-portraits using fruits and vegetables, identifying with the four seasons. Called the 'Grandfather of Surrealism', his art was later emulated by the likes of Picasso and Dali. Renaissance artists also created dreamlike paintings & optical illusions. Holbein and da Vinci used anamorphic images that were distorted unless viewed from a certain vantage point.

I am drawn to portraits, especially self-portraits. Art of the 16th century was often allegorical, with paintings of a subject disguised as something else.  I enjoy such departures from reality, along with more modern forms of abstract expressionism.

Whatever the subject or artistic style, I appreciate seeing the interaction between artistic elements and how the artist achieves the concepts (e.g. texture and space).


Optical and kinetic art is precise and often uses geometry and complementary colors of varying intensity to create interest and lighting effects. I enjoy Pop Art in that it combines several elements and principles of art, placing familiar subjects with the unfamiliar or in dream-like or surreal settings.

Kinetic art depends on motion for effect. One of my neighbors collects yard art sculptures some of which spin and cause optical effects. While in Palm Springs, I was introduced to the art of Israeli sculptor and optical and kinetic artist, Yaacov Agam.


He is famous for creating Agamographs, kinetic art with a series of images that change when viewed from different angles. Agamographs, like holograms, may not look like much when standing directly in front of them. You need to move or walk by them to reveal each of the designs. Point of view is important when observing art. I tell my students to stand back at first, then move closer to see how the artist achieved the effect. 




Although the term for such images was named after Yaacov Agam in the 1950s, this technique was in fact done much earlier in 1692 by Gaspar Antoine de Bois-Clair for the double portrait of Frederik IV and his sister Sophie Hedevig which hangs today in Rosenborg Palace in Copenhagen, Denmark. Apparently, one or two more of these double portraits are attributed to Bois-Clair. I was lucky enough to see works by both artists.

Today, Ukrainian artist Oleg Shuplyak and American artist Troy Gua execute double image portraits without using ribbed canvases. Salvador Dali is also famous for using double imagery in his Surrealist compositions.

Richard Anuszkiewicz is an American Op Artist who used complementary colors, intensity, and the effect of light on color. He used geometry, primarily square forms, and lots of precision to create his optical illusions.

Wikilinks credit Holland Cotter for describing Anuszkiewicz's paintings by stating, "The drama -- and that feels like the right word -- is in the subtle chemistry of complementary colors, which makes the geometry glow as if light were leaking out from behind it."

Bridget Riley is an English Op Artist who began painting with impressionist landscapes and also studied Pointillism prior to exploring optical art. She is the first woman to be awarded the Dutch Sikkens (Colour) Prize. Divisionism played a role in the development of her later optical style.

American abstract painter, Larry Poons is famous for co-creating the sleeve design for the Beatles' album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band and two of the Who's albums. His Op Art of the 1960s included dots and ellipses. His later work is somewhat reminiscent of Jackson Pollock but more colorful and often with much larger and more pronounced drips.








English Pop Artist, Peter Blake is famous for creating The Who's “Face Dances” album cover of 1981. These portraits of band members -- Pete Townshend, Roger Daltrey, John Entwistle, and Keith Moon -- were painted by Blake and fifteen other artists.













My favorite is Hungarian-French Op Artist, Victor Vasarely. His geometric designs and colorful graphics create wonderful illusions of space and depth. My 5th-graders created their own Op Art using carefully woven strips of contrasting colored paper and wavy lines.

You've likely heard of American Pop Artists, Roy Lichtenstein, and Andy Warhol. They are two of the most famous and most often shown in this genre. We often see yellow-haired women in Lichtenstein's comic-book style halftone images (note the 'Ben-Day dots').

Note the shape of the hair in Picasso's women (both Marie Thérése) and the red and yellow shapes passing through the eyes in Léger's figure. The facial features of the man in Lichtenstein's piece also mimic those of Léger's figure.

Our final Pop artist is America's Andy Warhol, famous for his Campbell Soup cans (and other ads) and iconic images of Marilyn Monroe. Photos were taken at his 2018 exhibit at Palm Springs Art Museum.

Picturesque Antelope Canyon, Arizona - A Photographer's Dream




In 2018, on our way back from California, we visited Antelope Canyon east of Page, Arizona. Guided tours of the rocky caverns containing much-photographed sandstone formations have been conducted exclusively by Navajo tribesmen since 1997. The swirling patterns, textures, and natural lighting effects produce abstract images of yellow, orange, pink and purple. When the guide threw dirt into a stream of light it created an ethereal blueish line.








It is difficult to choose between the number of spectacular photos my family and I were fortunate enough to capture.







On the same trip in 2018, Palm Springs Art Museum was exhibiting the works of Andy Warhol. I was able to capture one of his diamond dust prints, an unusual negative portrait of the artist, Georgia O'Keefe. What makes it even more creepy is the fact that I caught Warhol's reflection from another print on the opposite wall.

Here's one of her landscapes described as 'red and yellow cliffs' taken from the blog of Michael G. Imber containing more landscapes and describing how Ms. O'Keefe lived and camped in the desert to find her inspiration.







The images from Arizona are reminiscent of the abstract flowers painted by Georgia O'Keefe prior to 1920 as well as by her New Mexico landscapes in the 1940s.

Peter Lik's black-and-white photo shot in Antelope Canyon in 2014 sold for $6.5M. Personally, I like my "Sasquatch" shot in 2018 at Zion National Park. Maybe you can see my phantom shape next to the tree and above the boulder.
